Bideford Quay

An improvement scheme along the historic quay of Bideford in
North Devon, which combines separate projects by the Environment
Agency, Torridge District Council and Devon County Council, has
resulted in the choice of 4,500 square metres of Charcon EcoPave to
provide a coherent hard landscaping link between all three.

EcoPave offers strong aesthetic appeal with exposed Cornish
granite aggregates to give a textured black fleck, granite finish.
Charcon's 'Eco' range is amongst the most environmentally friendly
available due to the type of raw materials used and changes in the
production process right through to packaging and delivery. As a
result it can help Local Authorities meet set environmental quotas,
under Agenda 21.
"Given the three projects it was important the whole scheme
should be viewed as one. For continuity a coherent strategy in
relation to materials was formed by all parties' designers,
including contractors Nuttall and South West Highways. Charcon
EcoPave matched our requirements for an economic and sustainable
material and a simple colour palette to reflect the tradition and
heritage of Bideford as well as its modern aspects.
The fact the product mix uses the most sustainable resources and
is produced locally at Rockbeare, were also key factors in our
selection of EcoPave. EcoPave is a good looking, high-quality
product which has a weathered granite-like appearance. The size of
the paver has transformed the area into more of a boulevard for
pedestrians, and its aesthetics mix well with the generous granite
kerb used and the cope on the flood defence wall."
