Project objectives

As part of a £16.8m programme of street improvements in the city centre, the client set out to reconnect the two parts of the city centre by replacing the subway and roundabout with direct surface pedestrian crossings. Road space was reallocated to a bus lane and enlarged pedestrian areas around crossing points. Nottingham City Council also used the project to develop and test streetscape design policies resulting in their City Centre Streetscape Design Manual.

Charcon solutions

Because aesthetic appeal was of utmost importance in the project, Ultrapave paving in Silver Grey was chosen. Natural Granite Kerbs were also selected to match the paviors and Charcon also developed a range of specialist granite paving including tactile and hazard warning materials. Using steel reinforced paving has extended the life of product in use substantially, in line with Nottingham City Council’s commitment to using sustainable products. Charcon has also worked closely with the client to meet the legislative and logistical challenges dictated by the busy and tight city centre working areas. Charcon modified the paving packaging for easier mechanical handling and installation.

“Charcon worked tirelessly to source and deliver the specified material on time and without any issues on an extremely demanding project. The main success was the close working relationship between our two organisations and Charcon is now a strategic partner in the continued improvement of the City Centre.”
