In order to provide ‘a sporting opportunity for all’, the car park and roof drainage system at the new Salford Sports Village had to be able to withstand the full force of the British weather. In keeping with Salford City Council’s sustainable development policy, a Charcon Sustainable Drainage System was chosen to meet the project criteria.

Client:

Urban Vision (Salford City Council / Capita Symonds / Morrisons partnership)

Design:

Salford City Council Highways Design Section

Products used:

  • Permavoid
  • Permachannel

Project objectives

  • Design a sustainable drainage solution
  • Accommodate flood defences being built locally
  • Deal with storm run off from a ‘once in a hundred year’ rainfall event
  • Deal with sandy and clay soils and relatively high ground water levels

Charcon solutions

  • Permavoid cellular interlocking box structure used as basis for scheme
  • Permavoid configuration produced high surface area to volume ratio and good infiltration drainage
  • Use of geotextile fleece protects against ingress of silts
  • 150 mm thickness ideally suited to car park drainage systems
  • Permavoid units weigh less than 3kg, so the 4257 units required were easily handled on site
  • Minimum excavation work required
  • Petrol interception/oil separation solved by Charcon Permachannel

“One of the considerations during the design was the incorporation and use of a sustainable drainage system within the car park area. As this was something that the engineering design section had not undertaken before, Charcon were contacted with a view to assisting with the specification of materials and designing a sustainable drainage system.”
