Charcon Claims a Place in the Sun in Lowestoft
Hard landscaping specialist Charcon has supplied almost 1,000
square metres of Natural Yorkstone Flag Paving and Setts as part of an exciting package of measures
to transform large areas of Lowestoft's shopping and seafront
areas.
Part of the East of England Development Agency (EEDA)
Regeneration Plus initiative, the Waveney Sunrise Scheme is a
£14.7m programme to transform the infrastructure and environmental
image of the public realm in Lowestoft's town centre and South
Lowestoft and is supported by Waveney District Council, Suffolk
County Council and part-funded by the European Union. Improvements
include restoration of prominent buildings, tree planting, new
street furniture, improved lighting, extended pedestrian areas,
footpath widening, car park enhancements and upgrading of
crossings.
A design focus group specified a variety of products from
Charcon's comprehensive natural range. As part of the refurbishment
and pedestrianisation of Lowestoft's main shopping street, a
combination of Natural Yorkstone Flag Paving and Setts in a range of sizes and finishes were used
to create a 'string of pearls' in the three squares, providing
natural stopping off points.
In Station Square, Highmoor Natural Yorkstone Flag Paving has also been used
to create a 6.7m circular feature, marking the spot where the
town's Christmas was traditionally sited. However the stone circle
will shortly provide an attractive home for a permanent art
installation which will be specifically designed for the site.
Used throughout the country for many years in high profile
locations, natural Yorkstone is renowned for its beauty and hard
wearing properties. Available as flag paving and setts in a range
of traditional colours, Charcon's premium Natural Yorkstone Flag Paving will enhance any
hard landscaping project. The unique, entirely natural colour
variations and historical nature of these products provide a
classic appearance to complement any modern design.
Highmoor is one of the most distinctive and popular Yorkstones
available. Its highly colourful patterning ranges from cream/buff
to gold/brown. The variations in colour with individual slabs
incorporating greys and blues are particularly pronounced and, with
its high-quality technical properties, make it a favourite with
specifiers.
In addition, Charcon has supplied more than 2,500 square metres
of Woburn Rumbled Block Paving in Graphite for the
main pedestrian thoroughfare with Countryside Classic Kerb delineating the former
kerb line to give the sense that London Road North was originally a
busy main road. A further 2,000 square metres of Woburn Rumbled Block Paving in Rustic and
additional Countryside Classic Kerb are also being supplied
for the creation of five pedestrian areas which link London Road
South and Marine Drive, which runs along the main Esplanade.
Samantha Harvey at Suffolk County Council said: "London Road
North has been transformed into a high quality town centre
environment. The hard landscaping and other improvements provide an
attractive image which will ultimately help increase visitors. In
addition to injecting a sense of quality and warmth, the Natural Yorkstone Flag Paving helps to link the
buildings flanking the squares into the streetscene, creating a
real sense of space."
