Charcon moves into a new realm with the Civic Trust

Continuing the company’s long standing relationship with The
Civic Trust, Charcon showed its support for the fourth consecutive
year by sponsoring the Hard Landscaping Award at the Trust’s
49th awards scheme. The Civic Trust Awards
recognise the very best in architecture, urban design, landscaping
and public art, awarding projects of the highest quality design,
which are judged to have made a positive contribution to the local
environment – and helped improve the places where we live.
The Clydebank Public Realm, Phase 1a in
Clydebank, Scotland scheme was announced as the winner of the Hard
Landscaping Award in this hotly contested category.
The West Dunbartonshire Council contemporary
townscape scheme forms part of the major regeneration of a former
ship building area, which had drifted into decline. Using modern
contrasting materials, including in situ concrete and grey granite
walls, black polished granite and stone paving, the architects,
JMarchitects and landscape designers, Wooltack Barn Marloes, worked
together to create a seating area which is protected against
skateboards and gives visitors a place to relax on two levels.
This plaza forms a pleasant space, which
although close to noisy through-traffic is well used and provides a
safe place to enjoy the area. The scheme has started to rejuvenate
the area, linking the town to the River Clyde, creating an identity
and reflecting the heritage of the area in the public realm.
Fraser Higgins, Commercial marketing
controller for Charcon, said: “Charcon, an Aggregate Industries
business, is delighted to be associated with the Civic Trust again.
The regeneration and improvement of both rural and metropolitan
areas continues to be immensely important for the sense of
well-being they can provide for both local residents and
visitors.
“The award is of special significance to
Charcon in combining an appreciation of good hard landscaping
design with the recognition of schemes that positively relate to
their settings and the people they serve.
“The development and use of creative,
practical and durable hard landscaping solutions are vital elements
in the process of creating lasting sympathetic, accessible and
comfortable environments. Charcon’s aim is to encourage attractive
schemes that demonstrate a unique approach to hard landscaping,
with a strong emphasis on innovative design.”
