Derby Shopping Centre Gets A Makeover With Charcon

With the new-look Westfield Derby shopping centre on
its doorstep, Charcon Hard Landscaping supplied an entire package
of Yorkstone, granite and concrete hard landscaping materials for
the £340 million redevelopment scheme, which will regenerate the
southern part of Derby city centre.
Charcon supplied 5,000 sq.m of landscaping materials including
Appalachian Black Fleck, Moordale, Natural Granite and Highmoor
Natural Yorkstone flag paving, Woburn Rumbled block paving and kerb
products; Countryside Kerb and EcoKerb.
Joint owners Westfield and Hermes and Derby-based Latham
Architects appointed Charcon for the scheme, headquartered locally
at Hulland Ward near Ashbourne, reinforcing the project’s aim to
invest in the local community and support local businesses.
Gary Thorogood-Page Senior Landscape Architect at Lathams, says,
“We decided on a range of high quality landscaping materials using
a variety of muted textures, flag sizes and shades to compliment
the building’s façade, the stone flooring inside the centre and the
general colour and texture palette found within Derby city centre.
The Appalachian paving for example is offset with natural Yorkstone
and bands of natural granite ranging from shades of light pink to
dark grey around lighting columns, tree pits and cycle routes.
“Charcon’s wide range of materials, our own past experience and
our locality gave us the opportunity to view its whole range and
define a palette bespoke for Derby. The overall effect is
impressive, and due to support from Derby City Council and
Westfield, it is a true reflection of the original
specification.”
Commenting, Charcon’s Natural Stone Manager, Richard Colton,
says, “We have worked closely with Derby City Council, Westfield
and Hermes and Latham Architects for four years to bring this
scheme to fruition, and are delighted to have been so heavily
involved in such a high profile project.”
Westfield Derby is the catalyst for the regeneration of Derby.
The original centre, the Eagle Centre, opened in 1975 and contained
around seventy shops, attracting 19 million shoppers a year.
Contemporary architecture, a superior selection of favourite
high street brands, and a number of great services combine to make
Westfield Derby the number one shopping centre in the East
Midlands.
The development creates a centre that provides a new shopping
experience with 732,000 square feet of new retail space, a new 800
seat eating area, a 12 screen city centre cinema as well as
improved access. Neighbouring streets are also getting a facelift;
with additional shops and cafes, wider pavements, outdoor seating
and better links to the railway station.
