Design considerations
The problem
Each year, more than a third of all three-day injuries reported
to the Health and Safety Executive and local authorities are caused
by manual handling – that is, the transportation or supporting of
loads by hand or by bodily force.
The Health and Safety Executive made the decision to target kerb
laying as an especially hazardous activity due to the excessive
weight of each kerb and repetitive strain injuries incurred through
manual handling.
The problem is viewed so seriously that contractors infringing
lifting regulations have been served with site closure notices.
Solution through innovation
Charcon’s K-lite™ lightweight kerb weighs a nominal 20kg, while
meeting the same rigorous performance criteria as a standard weight
kerb.
K-lite™ lightweight kerb has been developed to meet the
requirements of the HSE guidelines in situations where safety
audits and risk assessments have been carried out and mechanical
handling is found not to be a viable option.

Standards
K-lite™ Traditional kerb products comply with the performance
levels in European Standard BS EN 1340.
Composition and manufacture
Manufactured from South West granites using a wet pressed
method. The kerb is then split and shot blasted to expose the
aggregate.
